Axor Urquiola - Axor
For demanding clients, customization is old hat. Personalization, however, is the buzzword of the moment for Axor, which commissioned Patricia Urquiola to design a suite of bath appointments for unpredictable characters. Axor Urquiola’s 29 components share a penchant for gentle, sensual curves. Linking past and present, Urquiola mimicked the profile of an antique washtub for a freestanding bathtub, then repeated the shape in sinks mounted on counter or wall. All three are molded from a polyester-coated mineral composite, with space-saving integrated towel holders. The lithe brass thermostatic faucet assemblies, offered in chrome or polished nickel, come in seven models for sinks, five for tubs, and two each for shower and bidet. An extensive assortment of accessories overlooks no detail, right down to the toothbrush tumbler.

Kitchen Renovation Part 3 – Getting Rid of Stuff

Kitchen Renovation
Construction waste management – lots of laughs, especially when the waste is from your own kitchen renovation and you are determined to send as little as possible to the landfill.

My bid notes directed that all waste must be diverted from the landfill fill to the extent possible. Submit a waste management plan and identify waste diverted through sale, reuse or recycling; identify all materials that cannot be recycled, salvaged or reused.

The Seed Cathedral

“The Seed Cathedral” features 60,000 fiber-optic rods which pierce through the six-level structure. Each rod contains seeds from the Millennium Seed Bank in Great Britain.

Here is more information from Thomas Heatherwick: “The Seed Cathedral sits in the center of the UK Pavilion’s site, 20 meters in height, formed from 60,000 slender transparent rods, each 7.5 meters long and each encasing one or more seeds at its tip. During the day, they act as optic fibers and draw daylight inwards to illuminate the interior. At night, light sources inside each rod allow the whole structure to glow. As the wind moves past, the building and its optic “hairs” gently move to create a dynamic effect ” Stunning! The Met Hotel

Zege Architects projected this contemporary hotel of 212 guestrooms in Greece accompanied by accommodations such as Spa, VIP lounge, conference rooms, gourmet restaurants and atmospheric bars.

The lobby/reception area is a generously open plan inviting you to walk through the space and explore the mod living in front of the dynamic fire place or the lounging comfort of the alternative living ambiences.

One of the restaurants, Chan, designed by Andy Martin, is treated like a “boutiesque” project, there is a space within a space approach designed for intimacy and privacy. The second restaurant is designed with an approachable ambience.

Glazing and natural day light plays a prime role. In the Spa the design language is kept simplistic and edgy. Day light is present in a controlled form and throughout the whole interior a hygienic essence is present.

In the corridors leading to the bedrooms we experience volume and warmth through the structural wood panel forms. Arriving inside the bedrooms there is the presence of wood, lacquer and glazing. Three finishes combined with smooth fabrics to create a luxurious but approachable space.

A special shop in Paris: Astier de Villatte

Last Tuesday I returned from an inspiring and delicious week in Paris. At the suggestion of this lovely blogger Leigh, I used this little book, by the blogger/ stylist extraodinaire Pia Jane Bijkerk, as a guide to find many of the places I wanted to go see. I would certainly recommend this book if you want a glimpse into some special places!

The last day I was there, I decided to make a trip to Astier de Villatte. Though it was out of my way, and on a street where I had absolutly no other ambitions (swanky Rue St. Honore), I went. And I was so glad I did. The shop is gorgeous. I read that the shop is in the former home of Napoleon's silversmith, and so it has kept an 17th century-feel: dimly lit with are low ceilings, uneven floors and small doorways. It's such a charming place, but not in the manufactured sense, you know?

Piled high on tall antique dark wood bibliotheques with are the stacks of white handmade pottery in perfectly uneven and beautiful little shapes. Some embellished, and some completely simple- these are a joy to look at. The pieces look handmade, and I loved them all. The small bowl I chose as a souvenir of my trip now sits in my kitchen window and makes me happy every time I see it.

1 Room – 2 Window Treatments

Dreamy, pretty and 'oh so warm, summer days', I love the simplicity of gorgeous designs such as these. The combination of patterns and colours in soft pastels bring a touch of femininity to lounges, creating an easy living and informal ambience which suits all styles of interiors beautifully.

With so many fabulous ready made curtains online it's easy to replicate this style of window dressing. In fact you could have two different weight curtains, one set for winter the other for summer, to banish the winter blues and give your rooms a breath of fresh air each spring and summer using floaty floral fabrics. When the cooler days of autumn approach swap for rich colours and heavy fabrics such as crushed velvet to bring a warm cosiness to your rooms.

Think outside the box, rather than have the same pair of curtains all year round, use ready made eyelet curtains and wooden curtain poles to make the switch over effortless.

It's a great way to liven up your rooms and cost effective to boot! Add coordinating accessories, filled cushions, table lamps and rugs and the dynamics of your living space can be altered instantly and effectively.

You don't have to keep redecorating, choose white or neutral colours for walls, floors and ceiling as these will team with accent colours wonderfully.

The Cave Restaurant

The Cave Restaurant belongs to Koichi Takada Architects and it is located Sydney, Australia. The architects came up with this very original dining concept whose aim is “to change the way we eat and chat in restaurants”. A cave is all about unusual textures and acoustics, two elements that were fully taken advantage of in coming up with this design.

“The timber profiles generate a sound studio atmosphere, and a pleasant ‘noise’ of dining conversation, offering a more intimate experience as well as a visually interesting and complex surrounding. The series of acoustic curvatures were tested and developed with computer modeling and each ‘timber grain’ profile has been translated and cut from computer-generated 3-D data, using Computer Numerical Control (CNC) technology.”
